Here are five of my favorite homemade cleaners, their recipes, and printable labels for when you make your own!
WARNING: Feel free to tweak recipes (I know I do!) But don't ever MIX ammonia and bleach! The fumes can be extremely hazardous to your health!
Note: These are all written for 24oz Bottles, Divide or Double (etc.) as needed
Blessing 'in a Bottle
12 oz. of White Vinegar
12 oz. of Dawn Dish soap
1 tsp. of Laundry Detergent
also known as "kitchen Magic" This stuff will get through anything, make your sink and shower shine like new, and save you when just about nothing else works. The laundry detergent is optional-I add it simply to cover some of the vinegar smell!
Window Cleaner
1 oz. of White Ammonia
4 oz. of Rubbing Alcohol
1 drop of Laundry Detergent
Fill remaining space with Water
This is streak free, just like we like it. You can add a few drops of blue food coloring if you want it to resemble windex more (since it's mostly WATER), but there's truly no need~I've actually found I like this more than windex!
Air & Fabric Freshener
1 oz. of Scented Fabric Softener
2 Tbs. Baking Soda
Fill remaining space with Water
This is a 'fake febreze' recipe that I love! It has the fabric softener for scent (which you can buy in so many more cents than fabreze!) and the baking soda for odor elimination. The coloring will come from whatever hue your softener contains. Again, most of this is JUST WATER, amazing how much we're spending for a few ounces of cleaner and a bottle full of water, huh?
Bleach Cleaner
2 oz of Bleach
1 tsp. Laundry detergent
Fill the remaining space with Water
Because everyone needs a bleach cleaner!
The Cure-All
5 oz. of Rubbing Alcohol
3 oz. of White Vinegar
1 tsp. of Laundry Detergent
1 tsp. of White Ammonia
2 drops of Essential Oil
Fill the remaining space with Water
This is kind of my "Multi-purpose, Multi-surface" Cleaner. I've added Essential oils to the recipe which make it smell nice and threw in a few drops of food coloring to separate it from the two other clear cleaners. I go through this probably the most out of any of them (as most of us do with our multi-purpose cleaners). Again, again, again-I'm so amazed with how much of this is water!!

Alrighty everyone, listen up! I've gotten literally over 100 emails, comments, and messages about where I purchased these bottles so I'm going to put it in one place here, lol!
The process of finding cute bottles was not easy, but the way I ended up doing it could not be any more convenient! I looked online for spray bottles around 25-30oz and there's lots of them, but you have to buy them in bulk, if you chose to pay a 'small order' fee, it often ends up at almost $7 a bottle a the least! I wasn't willing to sacrifice the sleek bottle look (because I hate the retail industrial cleaning bottles you can buy at the store) so what I ended up doing was simply going to target and getting 6 method cleaners when they were on price cut (which totaled less than 10 dollars). I then used a few empty milk jugs to store the cleaner from five of them and have since used this jug to refill the one cleaner over the last year. I removed the labels from the remaining empty bottles and used them for my home made cleaners.
Short answer: Go to the store and find a bottle you like, buy six of them, empty five, and use those :) Some of you want these bottles specifically so I'd advise going to target, and pick up any of their 28 oz 'method' cleaners.

DeleteI bought a six-pack of the Glaceau Smart Water for a little over $5. Most sprayers work with these bottles (I re-purposed some of my sprayers from cleaner bottles), they look very similar to the Method cleaner bottles shown in your picture and they're 20 oz. Getting the sticky off was tricky, but soaking in vinegar-soaked paper towels, a scour pad, Dawn, & a little muscle did the trick!
DeleteJust use Goo Gone to remove sticky stuff off your bottles. Works like a charm.
DeleteI've used Heinz brand white vinegar bottles with sprayers that came on cheap bottles from the dollar store. I like that they are glass and a nice shape. It makes my cleaning kit a little heavier, but I haven't broken one yet since they are so strong.

There are tons of great sites with fun bottles to buy but often have a 'small order fee' because they're designed to sell in bulk. Once you add all that together it was cheaper for me to go buy 5 cleaners from Target (method) combine them in a milk jug (to refill one cleaner, periodically), and use the rest for my cleaners :)

ReplyDeleteIn contrast to how vibrant commercial cleaners are (translates: TONS of food coloring) just the few drops I put in is nothing! You really don't have to add food coloring at all, I decided to for visual reasons :)
DeleteWhen you say laundry detergent do you mean the liquid form or powder form. And what type and brand do you use that works well? I have made homemade cleaners before but never used laundry detergent, have to try :)
ReplyDeleteI use the liquid kind (you could conceivably use powder, but Id recommend boiling the water as to insure it devolves completely). I just so happen to use 'All' in this batch but really anything should work :) Just remember it will adopt the color and scent of the detergent you're using!

I use a homemade laundry detergent but it has borax in it and I read that you shouldn't mix that with bleach. Would regular dish soap work to replace the detergent?
DeleteI found some of the spray bottles at Five Below for $2 a bottle. Not bad and you can get them in an assortment of colors (blue, pink, green, clear, etc.) That is the only place I could find ones which didn't look "commercial". ~Heidi

I'm new to the idea of making your own cleaners, and I just discovered how much straight up vinegar can clean! Just curious about the benefit of the other cleaners added to it
ReplyDeleteStraight up Vinegar with DEFINITELY do the trick, but there is a theory to this cleaner, the Laundry detergent adds a little bit of scent and obviously a cleaning agent, Ammonia is famous for getting up tons of stains and marks that many cleaners can't and this as well as the rubbing alcohol is also a tough disinfectant. There's definitely a splash of vinegar in here, too because when all of this is added together it makes a mean multi-purpose agent especially when an essential oil is added-which brings me back around to the biggest difference: You get a great cleaner, that's dirt cheap to make, and your house won't smell pickled after your done cleaning ;)

I also have granite countertops and have been using vinegar liquid from soaked orange peels spray daily and my wonderful standby homemade ammonia cleaning mix spray for tougher cleaning and have found no negative reactions with either one of them.

DeletePine Sol is the best for pet urine odors. It even gets out old stains. We pour the Pine Sol on the stain and allow it to sit for about an hour. then, we suck it up with our carpet cleaner.
Deleteah! love your printables! your recipes are stuff I already have at home. i just started making my own laundry soap, fabric softener and febreeze. (i was already buying handmade body washes from a friend who sells soap). i'm excited to get ALL the harmful chemicals out of my home!! loving that i can add my own fragrance oils and have my entire home smell like mandarin oranges and cranberries when you walk in! Love the labels so i can label them and my DS12 (who is homeschooled; we do our house blessing together every morning before school)will be able to EASILY see what cleaner he's grabbing and know that he's got the right one for each job. These recipes make enough also that i can fill two sets of bottles. one for upstairs! one for downstairs! YAY! And now we're down to 5 cleaners! All those others can go away!

DeleteI used a method bottle when I ran out for a homemade cleaner, but it was one of the antibacterial cleaners, and now whenever I use my homemade cleaner, it smells like the product that was previously in the bottle... Any ideas for getting the smell out?
ReplyDeleteWhenever my tupperware has a funny smell I'll boil some water and add baking soda to it since it eliminates odors-pour it in and let it sit overnight-this should work! I've also heard that Vanilla extract eliminates the odor as well but that stuff is pricy ;)
DeleteI was like you, didn't think that I'd save THAT MUCH if I made my own. Wow were we wrong! I made the Febreze yesterday. A 48 oz bottle of fabric softener was $4.99 (Which is probably more than I should have paid,b ut I was so excited to make my own that I didn't wait until I had coupons. But it was on sale at least!), and then I had bought a box of baking soda for $.49. So the 1 oz of fabric softener cost $.11, and the 2 tbsp of baking soda cost $.02. I didn't count for the water because I don't know how much the water cost, maybe a couple pennies. I reused my Febreze bottle and so I made a new batch for about $.13! I always thought Febreze was expensive, but I would buy it on sale, with coupons. Never bought it for $.13 though! And I think it worked REALLY well!! Thanks! Can't wait to run out of other products so I can make the others!! So exciting!
ReplyDeleteHello and thank you for the recipes. I was so excited and made some of them yesterday. I was having so much fun cleaning (believe it or not! ) I was thrilled with the results. I especially love the glass cleaner. The blessing in a bottle was fantastic for the bathrooms (although it still made me cough a little so you need to have ventilation or fan on). I used both of the cleaners above without gloves and did not have any problems with skin irritation, however the general purpose cleaner really seemed to dry up the skin on my fingers-so I would recommend gloves with that one. That being said, I love my new cleaners and most likely won't be buying any others. Do you have a recipe for a furniture polish by chance??? Thanks again. Dianne
ReplyDeleteI use equal parts lemon juice and olive oil for furniture polish...you only need to use a little bit and it looks great when you're done!

ReplyDeleteAnything and everything-possibly I'm not cautious enough, but since the base is fabric softener and water (and I'm confident enough in whatever softener I use to run it with my clothes..) I've used it freely on the couches, pillows, chairs, blankets, etc.

ReplyDeleteAny standard measuring glass should have ounce indicators, if you don't have one you can pick on up at any kitchen supply store-Also using a simple unit converter will help (for instance 1 TBSP is half of an ounce, etc.
DeleteHi! I found you on pinterest also :) I've been making my own products for a few months now, and I'm excited to try out your recipes soon! For those of you that mentioned furniture cleaner/polish, I use a couple of great formulas that I believe I found on ehow, if I remember correctly!
ReplyDeleteFormula for making a spray furniture polish that helps prevent future dust build up:
*1/3 cup of jojoba, grapeseed, or coconut oil (coconut is my fave)
*1/2 cup distilled water
*30 drops lemon essential oil
*10 drops tangerine, wild orange, or citrus bliss (optional)
**I use doTERRA essential oils because they are the purest and most potent. Their quality is simply unmatched!! You can learn more about them here: www.mydoterra.com/blissfulessentials
Combine the water and oils in a spray bottle (glass is best since essential oils don't play well with plastic).
Be sure to shake well before each use and often during use.
Basic quick dusting formula:
Put 10 drops of coconut oil and one drop of any citrus oil directly on a soft dust cloth.

Combine the water and oils I a spray
I have found that good old olive oil is a great furniture polish. I apply it with a soft paper towel, let it sit a while, and then polish with more paper towel. Then I throw the paper towels away, of course. Works GREAT!!
DeleteWow, I have been using the Blessing in a bottle and Cure All for the last month and I love how these work. The smell is great and they do a fantastic job. We have a solid surface sink the Blessing mix does just the trick for it and stuck on foods. We've use the cure all to clean out our car, great for unknown children substances. I just made the window cleaner have yet to try it out but I have faith it will work just as well. Thank you for the tutorial and I plan on using these recipes from now on.

ReplyDeleteThe vinegar is still strong for the blessing in a bottle. it works great on the bathroom which was need a good cleaning but it smell like vinegar through my whole apartment now...do you think it would do any harm to use less vinegar and maybe put in some water?

I have looked all over for the clear bottles and have found that walmart looks like they have the clear bottles. It does say that it is limited stock and it will probably depend on your local Walmart.

ReplyDeleteNot sure what I did wrong when making the blessing in a bottle mix, but mine turned to a blue gooo almost bottle exploding mess. It does work great but is so think that it will not squirt out of the bottle and I have to pour a little out each time to use it.
ReplyDeleteWell, I had to mix up a just a small patch to figure what went wrong with the first big batch I made and it must of been the Laundry detergent I used in that. The small amount without it turned out just great.

I currently use Shaklee(c) products to clean my house, but will definitely use some of these recipes with my current Basic H(c) (no bleach or ammonia here) to liven up the cleaning process! Since the faux febreeze uses softner, have you ever had a problem with it staining since softner is capable of that if not used right in the wash? Also, do you think that downy sprinkles can be used for that recipe?

ReplyDeleteI clean houses for a living and always wanted to "start making my own" cleaners. I just made the "cure all" and "blessing in a bottle" and just cleaned my bathroom. I'm happy to say it works! the showerdoors I did have do twice but thats only because everything that I tried before didn't work. Great products and the comments are great too you get a lot of ideas. I'm thinking of christmas gifts :)

At first I was not sure bc the cure all cleaner smells like alcohol but as soon as I was done cleaning with it my house smelled so good bc it was clean and disinfected. Clean smells so much better than sweet smells that are just covering up odors. Who knew! Haha also the fake febreese smells awesome. Thank you so much!

DeleteI made all of your cleaners yesterday. They are awesome. Thank you so much for this. You totally save a ton of money by making your own. I calculated that the "Blessing in a Bottle" costs $1.20 per bottle. The "Window cleaner" cost $0.28 per bottle. The "Air and Fabric Refresher" costs $0.17 and the "Cure-all" costs $0.37. I bought all the items for these at Dollar General including the bottles for $21.00. I did not calculate the Bleach cleaner because I already had it at home. But thank you so much.

Another idea for bottles- I use Niagra Non aerosol spray starch as a wrinkle release (mix half a bottle with water) It smells wonderful works like a charm, and is much cheaper than Downy's Wrinkle Release spray! Anyway, I make two bottles out of one. I use the extra bottles when I refill as cleaner spray bottles. They are a perfect size and are milky white in color

DeleteThanks...I was just looking for this question, as I assumed maybe others had it; I will try Goo Gone (I think I still have some); when I have tried Goof Off and lighter fluid, which tend to be my go-to things for sticker residue, b/c they work better than Goo Gone, I've found they sometimes etch the bottles (I've used them with e.g., the free birthday products' bottles you get from Aveda if you're on their list). Thank you!

ReplyDeleteI mixed up a big batch of the dawn, vinegar and water, sprayed down my gutters and it ALL of the mildew that nothing else would touch off. I did the entire house and looks as if I have new ones. I had bought everything imaginable to try and get the crud off when I had it under my sink all the time!

ReplyDeleteSecond, am having a major issue with the 'blessings in a bottle' recipe. I followed it exactly, but it is SO very thick/goopy from all that Dawn! And it leaves a slimy film on things, almost like it needs to be rinsed off with water afterwards. Is that normal? Should it really be 12 ounces of Dawn? I have a Method 24 oz bottle, filled it half with Dawn and half with vinegar, but it's just so goopy and slimy. Anyone else had this issue?
I did. I have the same exact problem with that recipe. I'd love to hear anyone else's response! I want to make my own cleaners, because I am pregnant and I don't want to harsh chemicals.
DeleteTry heating up the vinegar first. It helps to "melt" the dish soap and it seems to incorporate better.
DeleteI think most Dawn products I've seen (I'll look more carefully next time I go to the store, but I have one in the basement I use on grease stains in laundry) are the concentrated kind. I wonder if the recipe is for regular, not concentrated dish soap?
DeleteI have been using these recipes for a while now. Yes the Blessing in a Bottle does tend to need to be rinsed off. But it leaves a wicked nice shine on faucets and sinks though. If you are looking for something that you can just spray and wipe off then the Cure All is a better option :)
DeleteThanks for all of these recipes but just wanted to pass along this info...bleach and water solution begins to lose its effectiveness fairly quickly so it is recommended that a fresh batch is made at each use. I would assume that commercial products have something added that stabilizes the solution.

ReplyDeleteBut you are still using chemicals (detergent, amonia, dish soap, alcohol, etc) when you are going to get the same results if you use only baking soda, vinegar, oxigen peroxide, essentials oils, borax, totally organic and safe for your family and pets.

I found this as a link for natural cleaning. There is nothing natural about these cleaners. I already make my own laundry soap and dishwasher soap from ALL natural products and the end result is inexpensive clean items. I will not return to your blog.

Nowhere do I state that they're all natural, or free of any chemicals. I simply make them at home. I have no control over the fact that a third party incorrectly linked them as such. Happy blogging.

DeleteI'm in love with the Blessing in a bottle and the Cure-all, I pretty much use these to clean the bathroom and kitchen and they are amazing. The only thing I did differently was add Downy UNstopables (a little less than half a clap full, in a 32oz spray bottle) and these little beads mask the smell of the vinegar, they also don't change to color of the cleaners and they smell amazing.

ReplyDeleteLove the Blessing in a bottle. Im hooked on it. The only thing i did different was add about 2oz of water didnt like how "soapy" it was. Other then that i didnt change a thing. Again LOVE IT. Thank you for sharing.

♥ ♥ ♥ these!!!! They are wonderful! I use them everyday and at this very moment I'm making all of them for my Mom! A note on the bottles: I found really nice ones at the Dollar Tree, they have different colors of sprayers and then today I went to Dollar General and they had a pack of 3 for $2 and they have colored sprayers as well. They are really nice compared to the "commercial looking" one I got at Walmart. Just thought I'd share.

Please forgive me if someone has already pointed this out. I love this cute cleaner idea. I own a cleaning company and am looking for ways to make us cute. I do see one possible issue with your products. The products that are clear have opposing products in them. They should never be mixed. If someone were to mix the bottles up and use the first one and then realize their error and switch products and accidentally mix them it could really hurt the person or worse. Never mix bleach and ammonia. I'm sure you know that, but a lot of people do not.
ReplyDeleteHi, I found you on Pinterest and have finally made these cleaners this afternoon! I was really excited because I found 12oz colored bottles at the Dollar Tree. So I did the blue bottle for the window cleaner, the green bottle for the Cure All and a pink bottle for the air and fabric freshener. So excited to use chemical free cleaners that cost me pennies!! I had all the ingredients on hand and only had to buy the bottles. Thanks for the recipes. :)
